How to name a team jersey
A jersey name has two jobs: sound like the team and fit on the back. The best names are two or three syllables, easy to chant and readable in a block or varsity face.
Start with the place, the sport or the thing the team is known for. Then shorten it until it fits. A name that needs an explanation is not a jersey name yet.

Nameplate rules that save a reprint
Most nameplates allow 10–14 characters, including the space. Long surnames get condensed or shortened; they do not get a smaller font that disappears on the field.
Set the name in caps, check the letter spacing and test it at the final print size. If the name is too long, shorten it before you shrink it.
From name to design
Once the name is set, take it into the AI studio and describe it above the back number. Describe the nameplate and letters separately so a roster change is a new render, not a new design.
