The five jersey font families

Block is the safe default for athletic lettering: even strokes, open counters and readable at every size. Varsity adds a collegiate look but needs space around the outline. Script and diagonal text belong on the chest or nameplate, not on the back number.

Italic suggests motion and works for short names. Condensed fits long surnames but loses stroke weight if you push it too far. Pick one expressive face and keep the rest neutral.

Size, spacing and outline rules

A back number is read from the stands, not from the bench. Set the number first, then the nameplate, then check the gap between them. If the name is long, reduce tracking before reducing the font size.

An outline helps on a busy pattern, but it should be even on all sides. A thin font on a striped jersey without an outline will disappear.

From preview to print

The preview is a planning aid. Once the type is set, take the name and number into the AI studio and describe them on the real jersey template.

Export a transparent PNG for the printer and keep the font name in the design notes. If the printer does not have the font, convert the text to outlines before sending.
